Abstract:
This data set is a digital version of the gereral geologic map data developed by the South Carolina Geological Survey. This data was created from original field work and/or compiled from existing geologic map data. The data was constructed by digitizing maps, compiling information onto a planimetric correct base, or revising digitized maps using remotely sensed and other information.
Purpose:
Data intended to assist South Carolina Geological Survey personnel in maintaining geological information for the state of South Carolina. The digital geologic map database for the state has been created as a general-purpose data set that is applicable to land-related investigations.

Data is considered complete to the extent of the published South Carolina Geological Survey source map. Portions of the state may not have been visited or field checked. Interpretation of the geology in the state may have been supplemented by examination of the land surface using aerial photographs, shaded relief image(s) derived from a Digital Elevation Model (DEM), or both. Unit descriptions are provided in the map explanation. All geospatial database elements are attributed.

Process_Description:
This data was created by georeferencing and vectorizing existing files of the generalized geologic map of the state. The resulting lines were checked and edited based on the positioning of larger scale data that was available within the SCGS. The topology was validated as free from errors. The polygon feature class was built using the construct features tool. Then all line and polygons were attributed to match those attributes on the source publication (GGMS-1). Last, the feature class was exported to shapefile for distribution.
