The SCAEL is composed of laboratories at three institutions. The Marine Resources Research Institute (MRRI) of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and the Hollings Marine Laboratory (HML) are located in Charleston, SC on historic Fort Johnson (map).  The MRRI is an ideal facility for field and laboratory-based studies. Additional personnel work out of the nearby Hollings Marine Laboratory, a high-tech, multi-institutional facility. The Baruch Marine Field Laboratory (BMFL) is located in the Hobcaw Barony, approximately 80 miles northeast of Charleston (map). The BMFL is a component of the Belle Baruch Institute for Marine Ecology and Coastal Science, a department of the University of South Carolina.
