SC Phytoplankton Demographics

Our list of HAB occurrences in SC waters has expanded to 25 harmful algal species (designated when abundances > 1000 cell ml-1, with the exception of Pfiesteria spp., when abundance exceeded 100 cell ml-1;). Most of these have been associated with potential or documented harmful effects.

A summary of the screening results from all the samples collected from 2000-2005 demonstrates that the ranking of important phytoplankton species in South Carolina changes dramatically when you consider total abundance rather than just documenting the presence of a given species. While there are many diatoms, mixed flagellate and dinoflagellate species represented in our database (Table 1), most of the blooms are attributed to raphidophytes, dinoflagellates, and cyanobacteria (Table 1, Fig. 1). This report will discuss the intensive monitoring and experimental results evaluating these important harmful algal bloom producers in South Carolina waters.

Table 1. Results from the 2000-2005 SCHABP database with the top 20 species listed as present in # occurrences column and the top 20 species with densities greater than 1,000 cells/ml listed in the # blooms column.
