| Research at the SCAEL: In
addition to our monitoring
and event response missions, the SCAEL is first and foremost a research
laboratory focusing not only on HABs, but on all aspects of
phytoplankton ecology. A comprehensive listing of our current projects can be found here. The SCAEL is also
engaged in research partnerships with the SC HAB program (SCHABP),
the SC task
group on harmful algae (SCTGHA),
and the Urbanization
in Southeastern Estuarine Systems (USES) project. |
 |
| Current Projects: The SCAEL
has projects underway in several sub-specialties including; algal-microbial interactions, algal links to avian vacuolar
myelinopathy, nutrient dynamics in stormwater detention
ponds, HAB-detection tools,
land-use impacts on eutrophication in stormwater detention ponds, remote sensing, algal taxonomy, HAB effects on shellfish,
and toxin detection. Go to
the current projects page for
a comprehensive list. |
 |
SC HAB Statistics: The SC HAB statistics page has
information on phyotplankton distributions, bloom frequencies, and
taxonomic breakdowns. There is also an
interactive map of HAB and
fish kill
events in SC waters in recent years. Click on places and
species to learn more about the creatures we study and the environments
in which we find them. View the map here.
