The enormous downpours of rain attending the south Carolina Atlantic hurricane during its passage over the State between the 13th and 15th together with extraordinary rainfall over the drainage areas of the Saluda, Broad, and Catawba rivers in North Carolina up to the 18th created a situation favorable for the most extensive and destructive floods in the history of the Santee System, authentic records being available as far back as 1840.
