January 1966

This was described as the worst ice storm in over 50 years by power companies. The approximately 60-mile wide band of freezing rain and sleet extended southwestward from Dillon County, through Richland and McCormick Counties. Damage to power lines in the northeastern counties alone exceeded the million dollar mark. Heavy snow over the northwest, up to 6 inches, clogged highways, and closed schools for 3 to 4 days. Caesars Head with 18.5 inches of snow, established a new state record for snowfall for the month of January. The old record of 13.6 inches was established in January 1940 at Caesars Head.
