What are Conservation Districts? Conservation districts are a subdivision of state government under the local direction of a five-member Board of Commissioners. Three Commissioners are elected in the General Election and two are appointed by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources Board. District Commissioners volunteer their time and services to help improve natural resources. They work in partnership with staff who provide technical, educational and professional services to protect the natural resources of the district. The district works in conjunction with SCDNR and USDA-Natural Resources Conservation (NRCS). There are 46 conservation districts in South Carolina. Their boundaries are the same as county boundaries.
