Archery: "On Target For Life"
School teachers undergo an 8-hour Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) training program. The core content covers archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration, and self-improvement. In turn they present archery to their students. The students shoot at bullseye targets placed before an arrow resistant net in their gymnasium. Currently, 46 states and 4 countries have implemented the program. In South Carolina the Archery program has grown from 10 pilot schools to more than 200 public and private schools in a few years. As a culminating event the schools participate in a now 2-day State Tournament sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources. This year the Elementary schools will compete on March 22, 2012 and consequently the Middle and High schools will compete on March 23, 2012. This tournament is in conjunction with the Palmetto Sportsman's Classic (http://www.dnr.sc.gov/psc/) held at the State Fairgrounds in Columbia. First Place teams and individuals are eligible to compete at the National and World NASP Tournaments. The Virtual Tournament Deadline is February 29, 2012. All scores must be submitted by midnight with no exceptions. Each team must participate in the Virtual Tournament to be eligible for the State Tournament. TrainingFebruary 17, 2012 Newberry training has been cancelled. Another training will be scheduled at a later date.
