Carolina Coastal Adventure provides an opportunity each year for high school students to spend a fun weekend on the coast while learning about South Carolina's natural resources.

Carolina Coastal Adventure is a South Carolina Conservation Districts Foundation program in partnership with Santee Cooper, Old Santee Canal Park, Berkeley County, Berkeley Electric Cooperative, Berkeley Soil and Water Conservation District, SC Association of Conservation Districts and the SC Department of Natural Resources.

The Scoop

"Eighty teenage high school kids from all around the state, Left their homecoming football games to learn of our water's fate. We got a nifty water bottle, a journal and some beds, And Tammy got a South Carolina map to show us watersheds. Canoeing down the Ol' Santee we caught bugs for "tell and show", On to the sanitation factory where they cleaned the water from— Well, you really don't want to know! We bonded at the fire while singin' with Aunt Peggy Sue, Then we went to Charleston, still a lot to do. We went out on the boat and caught a lot of fish, But now I've got to pack my stuff, All these people, this entire place I know I'm going to miss."

Kelsey Worrell October 15, 2000

"The goal of this workshop is to bring each student to the realization that healthy aquatic ecosystems are valuable resources, which provide human communities with clean water, food, recreation and unique traditions. The participants bring their excitement and enthusiasm and leave knowing how each of us can make a difference. The students' level of respect for the environment is impressive. It is our hope that all South Carolianians will learn from one another and work to conserve our natural treasures for generations to come." ~

Briana Timmerman, DNR's, Land, Water and Conservation Division

"This cooperative educational effort really provided some unique opportunities for students to experience their coastal environments. The Marine Resources Division is interested in participating in these types of activities because we see the importance for students to understand how the fresh and saltwater of our state are linked together." ~

Jaconda Lightburn, DNR's Marine Resources Division
