Description

In 1989 James L. Mason bequeathed 1,999 acres to the S.C. Wildlife and Marine Resources Department (now SC Department of Natural Resources). The property is located in the southern part of McCormick county adjacent to the Savannah River. Most of the property is mature pine saw-timber on upland with a few hardwoods along the creeks and river. There is frontage along the Savannah River at two locations. Fifty-two acres were cleared and planted to longleaf pine in 1999, and 25 acres were regenerated to loblolly pine in 2001 using the seed tree method of regeneration. Eighteen acres have been cleared for use as wildlife openings. Prescribed fire has been used to manage timber stands where appropriate.

The property is in our WMA program and is open for hunting during the regular game zone seasons and is subject to Wildlife Management Area Regulations. Some roads on the tract are open seasonally, but are closed during portions of the year. The road system will continue to be developed in conjunction with future timber management activities.
