Description
The McBee WMA is composed of three individual parcels totaling 786 acres and located approximately 4 miles south-southwest of the town of McBee, South Carolina. The Farmers Home Administration granted the property to the DNR in 1994.
The tract is composed of approximately 333 acres of uneven age pine/hardwood, uneven age longleaf pine and planted loblolly and longleaf pine. A 20 acre public dove field is planted annually with winter wheat, corn, sunflowers and millet and hunting is allowed on Saturday mornings during the first season. There are over 300 acres of abandoned farm fields present with portions planted in wildlife openings and the remaining acreage is mowed, disked and burned to maintain the early successional habitat stage. The area provides good white-tailed deer and wild turkey hunting (special seasons apply), however this WMA is primarily managed for small game such as bobwhite quail and rabbit (special seasons apply). Quail hunting on this area is restricted to 4 computer draw hunts; applications are available from DNR.
