Description
The DNR McConnells Tract was acquired by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR) formerly the Wildlife and Marine Resources Department on December 23, 1974. It was purchased with county game and fish funds for $59,796.00 from Mr. Joe D. Smith and Ms. Alma S. Griffin. At the time the deed was recorded in 1974, the property was incorrectly conveyed to the County of York and it was not until April 30, 1985 that a quitclaim deed by the York County Council was executed and the property was correctly deeded to the DNR.
The DNR McConnells Tract consists of 249 acres and lies approximately 1.5 miles west‑northwest of the town of McConnells. It is located south of Turkey Creek near the intersection of county roads 888 (Parson Road) and 169 (Simpson Road). The property is situated at latitude of N 34 degrees and 53 minutes and a longitude of E 81 degrees and 17 minutes.
The tract consists of about 55 acres (22 percent) of pine timber stands and is primarily Virginia pine, some shortleaf and very scattered loblolly pine. Within the pine stands are scattered mixed hardwoods and Eastern red cedar. Hardwood stands on this tract comprise approximately 172 acres (69 percent) and are mostly upland although there are some mixed bottomland hardwoods that range from saplings to sawtimber. A significant number of desirable mast producing hardwood species such as white oak, red oak, hickory, beech, dogwood and black cherry occur on the tract. There are currently about 22 acres (9 percent) of open land on this tract that is utilized as linear wildlife openings and food plots.
Hunting of white-tailed deer, wild turkey, small game and furbearers is allowed within the Game Zone 4 seasons and bag limits.
