Webb Wildlife Center Swamp Image

Birdsong echoes through the stillness of the swamp, along with the call of a pileated woodpecker, the scream of a red-tailed hawk, the ghostly intonations of a barred owl. Watch for an enlarged growth halfway up the trunk of a cypress on the right, and pause to listen for birds as you contemplate this gnarled knot. The tree healed itself after a disease or injury by directing its growth to the area, in this case forming a huge mass on its bark. Other smaller versions of this natural feature provide interest in the swamp, with some burls resembling faces - water gremlins?
