The Program

E/V Discovery Catamaran PictureSince 1984 The Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund has supported education initiatives of The Marine Resources Division (MRD) of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). In 2007 the Harry Hampton FABulous (Fishing and Barrier Island) Series is being offered to those students who may not have the opportunity to explore the local marine or barrier island ecosystem. Through full day and overnight trips to Otter Island, via the Educational Vessel (E/V) Discovery, the MRD staff will emphasize the conservation and wise use of the state’s marine and coastal resources through a variety of hands on activities.


Cost: Free
Requirements: For over night participants, a parent or guardian must also attend.

Full-Day Trip Includes

  • Harbor trawl to identify common estuarine animals and plants
  • Ethical angling instruction demonstrated through surf fishing on Otter Island
  • Identification of common barrier island plants and animals
  • Boating safety and survival skill instruction

Overnight Trip Includes

  • Full day activities (as described above)
  • Map and compass instruction
  • Constellation instruction
  • Night walks and wades

 

Otter Island

Otter Island: A barrier island and Heritage Trust Property located in St. Helena Sound in the ACE Basin. This, and other surrounding islands, are protected by the National Estuarine Research Reserve System.
