Thanks for expressing an interest in the South Carolina Marine Game Fish Tagging Program.  This program has been an integral part of the Marine Resources Division of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for over thirty years. We were the first state agency that encouraged saltwater recreational anglers to tag and release and this cooperative partnership continues to this day. In 2004, there was a significant change in program operation. In an effort to gather more accurate tag and recapture data, while operating in a more cost effective and efficient manner, anglers who wished to participate were required to attend a training workshop before being supplied with additional tags and equipment. Workshops were held throughout the state during the Spring of 2005 and 150 recreational anglers completed training and became certified taggers. Maintaining a group of trained taggers has helped produce a more useful tag and recapture database.

If you are interested in participating in the Marine Game Fish Tagging Program as a certified tagger, we require that you pre-register for an upcoming workshop anytime after January 1, 2006. To register, please provide the following information via mail, phone, or email: your name, address, telephone number and workshop you plan to attend. The workshops are free of charge and the schedule for 2006 is enclosed. You can register up to the day before a workshop; however, space is limited, and slots will be awarded on a first come basis. All workshops are from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and provide instruction and discussion on proper fish handling techniques, tagging, accurate reporting of tag events, and other topics relevant to catch and release.

We appreciate your support of fishery conservation in South Carolina and interest in the Marine Game Fish Tagging Program. I look forward to meeting you at one of our tag and release workshops.
