Activity Information for SCDNR Managed Lands

Biking | Biking is allowed on roads open for vehicle traffic and some fire breaks. Please note that the road network through most DNR managed properties is not paved at this time and fire breaks are maintained to varying degrees. | |
Canoes | While Canoeing and/or Kayaking, SCDNR suggests that you wear your Personal Floatation Device (PFD) with an accessible whistle attached. Please be respectful of private property located above the ordinary high water mark while paddling rivers in South Carolina. | |
Driving | Vehicles may be driven only on those roads open to vehicle traffic. Do not cross closed gates, as these indicate road networks for management purposes only. No trespassing signs often indicate property boundaries between SCDNR property and that of neighboring private property. | |
Equestrian | Horses must be maintained on those roads opened to vehicle traffic or fire breaks designated for equestrian use. Do not allow your horse to stray from these areas at anytime during your ride. | |
Fishing | All persons over the age of 16 must be properly licensed to fish on SCDNR managed lands. Wildlife Management Area (WMA) permits are not required to fish on WMA or Heritage Preserve properties. Fishing License |

Hunting | All persons over the age of 16 must be properly licensed; including a WMA permit, to hunt on SCDNR managed lands. Additionally, all hunting on SCDNR managed lands must be done in accordance with all published game laws. Not all SCDNR Heritage Preserves are open for hunting. Important Bird Area | This area has been designated as an "Important Bird Area" in South Carolina. The purpose of the Important Bird Area (IBA) program is to identify sites that provide vital habitat for birds using a scientific set of criteria. Nature Viewing | Nature viewing is allowed on all SCDNR managed lands, except when closed for hunts. Please be aware of hunting activities and those seasons that they occur on many of the properties throughout the year. Please check the SCDNR Rules and Regulations for specific hunting closures. | |
Primitive Camping | Limited primitive camping is available on selected SCDNR managed properties for hunters and/or hunting parties. Note there are no facilities or utilities at the designated campsites. Camping must be done in accordance with rules and regulations of specific properties. Please contact the property manager for additional information. | |
Shooting Ranges | SCDNR operates three rifle ranges that are open for use during certain hours which are subject to change according to time of year, hunting seasons, etc. To confirm hours of operation, call the SCDNR Clemson office at 864-654-1671 ext. 18 or for Palachucola Range call 803-625-3569. US Forest Service has many ranges. |
