Join SCDNR at the Greenville Zoo for the "What's Up With Bats?" workshop October 23 and take home a completed bat box for your yard or garden.

Upstate residents are encouraged to join the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and the Greenville Zoo for "What’s Up With Bats?" a celebration of the only mammal that can fly.

During this community workshop, scheduled for October 23rd from 6- 7:30 p.m., participants will learn about the bats of South Carolina, and each family will also build a bat box to take home (kit and finished box pictured at left). The cost is $30 for zoo members or $45 for non-members (price includes two participants; add additional participants for $3 member/$5 non-member). The cost includes all materials and supplies needed to complete a finished box. The class will be held at the zoo and is appropriate for families with children ages 5 and up. Also, on October 26th, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., SCDNR biologist Jennifer Kindel will be manning the "bat booth" at the Greenville Zoo. Stop by with your questions and stories about bats!

Last but not least, on Saturday evening, October 27th, Sunrift Adventures and the SCDNR will be holding their third annual Halloween bat count. Sunrift's bat houses foster hundreds of beneficial insect-eating bats that emerge in an impressive display at sunset. Join Sunrift staff and volunteers in surveying and celebrating these mysterious creatures. There will be a bat talk, bat count, prizes, and a raffle for bat boxes

Bat Week is celebrated from October 24-31. This year's theme is “Be a Bat Hero!” More information at: https://batweek.org/ .
