Youth Bass Fishing League conducts recent tournament on Lake Murray
Eight members of the Saluda High School Bass Fishing Club recently fished Lake Murray on an unusually warm spring-like day on Feb. 19.
There was little chop on the water and only partly cloudy skies. Alex Coleman placed 1st individually with a weigh in of 12.60 pounds. Second place went to Brandon Proctor at 11.25 pounds. The combined weight put Alex and Brandon in first at the top of the team leaderboard.
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently partnered with The Bass Federation to form Youth Bass Fishing League Clubs at middle and high schools around South Carolina. Contact DNR Aquatic Education Coordinator Lorianne Riggin at (803) 737-8483 or RigginL@dnr.sc.gov to find out more about the Bass Fishing Clubs and their tournaments.
It's more than just the thrill of reeling in the big one and enjoying time with friends, fishing club members also learn information about fisheries management, artificial lures, attractants and more. There are currently five high schools and two middle schools.
Interested in forming a bass fishing club at your school and becoming a part of the Youth Bass Fishing League? All you need to do is get a minimum of six students (within the 11-18 year old range) with dues paid and you can have a Youth Bass Fishing League Club. You'll also need an adult at your school to help lead the Youth Bass Federation Club, provide advice and help arrange at least two club tournaments, fundraisers, speakers and other learning sessions pertaining to fishing for club meetings.
