Map Modernization, Risk MAP discovery meeting in Camden April 5
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Flood Mitigation Program will conduct a Discovery Meeting for the Wateree Watershed and its municipalities as part of the Map Modernization Initiative, Risk MAP. The meeting will be held April 5 at 10 a.m. in the Kershaw County Government Center, Council Chambers, 515 Walnut Street, Camden.
The vision of Risk MAP is to deliver quality data that increases public awareness and leads to action that reduces risk to life and property. Risk MAP builds on flood hazard data and maps produced during the Flood Map Modernization program implemented by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to update the nation’s Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) on a watershed basis. FEMA, DNR, and local governments are working together to successfully accomplish the goals of Risk MAP, which is to address gaps in flood hazard data, to promote public awareness and understanding of risks, as well as to plan, lead, and support communities to effectively engage in risk-based mitigation planning. County and municipal personnel have been previously invited to the Discovery Meeting.
The Discovery Meeting will serve to educate local officials on the Risk MAP program and their responsibilities in its implementation within their jurisdiction, as well as kick off the discovery phase. Three issues are determined during the discovery phase of Risk MAP including the mapping needs of each community, the final budget for the watershed study, and the final scope of work. This will be based on available base mapping information and a list of mapping priorities established at the local level during the discovery meeting.
