Youth Deer Hunt Day scheduled statewide Saturday, Jan. 7

Jan. 7 is scheduled for Youth Hunting Day where youth 17 years of age and under can hunt deer as long as they are accompanied by a licensed adult 21 years or older. Only the youth may take or attempt to take game and license requirements are waived for the youth hunter.

Some of the requirements include a limit of two deer, either sex, with no tags required. Private lands statewide are open to the hunt. All Wildlife Management Area's that normally allow deer hunting are open except: Bear Island, Crackerneck, Donnelley, Draper, Fant’s Grove, Keowee, McBee, Palachucola, Santee Coastal Reserve, Santee Cooper, Hatchery, Webb, Bonneau Ferry, Hamilton Ridge and Botany Bay Plantation.

The objective of these hunts is to properly introduce new, young hunters to the challenges, enjoyment and thrills associated with hunting white-tailed deer and to make sure that their early experiences are conducted in a safe and ethical manner. The age requirement for youth participating during these special hunts is 17 and younger. There is no application fee or license required for the youth hunter and these hunts are available at no cost to the participants. Adults who accompany youth hunters must be properly licensed including a WMA Permit if hunting on WMA land.

For more information on youth hunts for a variety of species check p. 87 of the Rules & Regulations.
