New fishing pier dedicated Feb. 8 at Steamboat Landing on Edisto Island
A new, larger more accessible aluminum fishing pier has replaced the old wooden fishing pier at Steamboat Landing on Edisto Island, with funding from the Saltwater Recreational License through a grant from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
A grand opening ceremony was held at the new pier on Feb. 8, 2013.
The pier is owned and maintained by Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission, which demolished the old pier. The new structure will provide better angler access and require less maintenance.
As the spring fishing season gets underway, anglers at the new pier can expect to catch trout, red drum, flounder, croaker and blue crab.
County government agencies that manage shore-based fishing facilities can apply to DNR for a grant to build, repair, or maintain structures used by anglers to fish in saltwater. Grants cover a portion of the overall costs. The owner is responsible for the remainder.
