December 11, 2015Williston man honored as Certified DNR Fishing Instructor of the Year
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) trains freshwater anglers each year to become Certified DNR Fishing Instructors for the Aquatic Education Section. These instructors teach the Family Fishing Clinics. Family Fishing Clinics are designed to introduce the basics of freshwater fishing to the young and old. Participants learn how to tie fishing knots, rig rods, cast, fish and more!
The 3rd Annual Certified DNR Fishing Instructor Banquet was held on Dec. 10 at the SC Department of Agriculture’s Phillip Market Center to thank the instructors for their hard work and dedication. Since the inception of the volunteer program in October 2011, there are over 168 trained volunteers. In 2015, volunteers have provided 30 Family Fishing Clinics reaching 637 participants with over 560 hours of volunteer time. 
David Seay of Williston in Barnwell County was trained January 25, 2014. “He is a passionate angler and is remarkably organized when teaching beginners how to fish. David is a gracious host to participants and warmly welcomes the company of co-instructors. He also assisted in the instructor trainings but conducting a ‘how-to host’ session. His passion and enthusiasm not only for fishing, but for teaching is contagious,” said Sarah Chabaane, DNR Aquatic Education Coordinator. David conducted 10 family fishing clinics as well as volunteering for the Palmetto Sportsman Classic and Youth Fishing Rodeos. He has logged over 94 volunteer hours. Congratulations to David and thank you again to all volunteers!

The intention of the Family Fishing Clinics is to introduce participants with little or no angling experience or those who need a refresher to the basics of fishing to increase their future participation in the sport. Participants will learn how and where to fish and have someone to fish with to become confident anglers.
