The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Artificial Reef Program works with S.C. Army National Guard to deploy surplus equipment, such as armored personnel carriers and shipping containers, onto artificial reef sites along the coast. This unique partnership, Reef-Ex, has taken place since 1997. Donated materials were placed onto the Little River Offshore Reef and the Jim Caudle Reef, located off of Little River Inlet in Horry County on July 8, 2009. The materials create thriving habitat, and with this refurbishing project, the reef sites are teeming with a wide variety of marine species.
