On July 17, 2002 the S.C. Department of Natural Resources' Artificial Reef Program successfully deployed 50 New York City subway cars off the coast of Charleston on the Comanche Reef site. The Comanche reef site is located about 35 miles offshore of Charleston in water that is 105 feet deep. Before the subway cars were placed on the reef, its only inhabitant was a 165-foot U.S. Coast Guard cutter called the USCG Comanche. (Video courtesy Bob Martore and Daryl Stubbs - SCDNR)
