Recent rains have relieved the Normal drought conditions for many South Carolina counties. According to Hope Mizzell, SC State Climatologist, some locations have received over 10 inches this month while others are reporting less than one inch. Overall, the situation has improved since the incipient drought declaration was issued June 8th. The SC Department of Natural Resources will leave the incipient drought declaration in place for counties reporting below normal June rainfall. These counties are Berkeley, Calhoun, Charleston, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Darlington, Dillon, Dorchester, Florence, Georgetown, Horry, Kershaw, Lee, Marion, Marlboro, Orangeburg, Sumter, and Williamsburg. Localized heavy rainfall is expected across the State during the upcoming week that may alleviate drought conditions in some areas currently under the incipient drought. The SC Department of Natural Resources will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed.

Contact Dr. Mizzell in Columbia at (803) 734-9568 or e-mail at mizzellh@dnr.sc.gov for more information.
