SPECIAL NEWS RELEASE May 4, 1999

WIDESPREAD RAINFALL ASSOCIATED WITH LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM
RELIEVES DROUGHT CONDITIONS

Low pressure located northwest of the state set up a moist surface flow early last week drawing in rainshowers from the Atlantic. Heavy showers, moving generally westward from the coast, continued through the week's end as the storm center was positioned offshore east of Charleston. Widespread rainfall produced by this system has alleviated drought conditions. Many areas of the state received over four inches of rain last week according to the State Climatology Office, S.C. Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). The statewide average for the event was 3.20 inches (see Rainfall Summary Table).

This announcement lifts the incipient drought declaration statewide. The SCDNR's Land, Water & Conservation Division  will continue to monitor state water supplies and assess the summer rainfall outlook. For more information contact Michael Helfert or Hope Mizzell: 803-737-0800.
