The South Carolina Department of Natural
Resources is convening the State and Northwest Drought Response Committee on Thursday,
September 30, 1999, at 10:30 AM. The meeting will be held in the Greenville
County Council Chambers, Greenville County Offices, 301 University Ridge, Greenville, SC.
The Committee will evaluate drought
conditions within the Northwest Drought Management Area (DMA) to determine if a need
exists for action beyond the scope of local government.
I strongly recommend that all committee
members and all water suppliers attend this important meeting. Water suppliers
will have the opportunity to discuss current and projected supplies. The continued
severity of drought conditions in the northwestern region of the state has generated major
concerns regarding water supply problems and potential forest fires. If
action in addition to local measures is necessary to insure adequate supplies of water in
the Northwest DMA, the Drought Response Committee will prepare recommendations to reduce
or alleviate drought impacts.
The Drought Response Committee should
consult with and invite participation by representatives of municipalities, counties,
commissions of public works, and any other water users in the Northwest DMA. Should
the drought situation continue to deteriorate, the Drought Response Committee will
immediately notify the Governor and provide a priority list of recommended actions.
All members are encouraged to review the
current precipitation, streamflow, and drought index material available on the South
Carolina Drought Information Web site:

I look forward to seeing you at the meeting.
