SC Department of Natural Resources One day.. Three Hours.. A World of Diffrence Beach Sweep River Sweep South Carolina

Notes from the Field

Following the completion of this years Beach Sweep River Sweep, the Department of Natural Resources would like to recognize Jimmy Bobo and all of the volunteers who participated in the Spartanburg Water Lake Sweep. The Spartanburg Water folks have participated in the Beach Sweep River Sweep event for Eighteen consecutive years. This year they collected an astonishing amount of debris, estimated at approximately 22,000 lbs. It took almost one hundred volunteers to collect this trash, making a big dent in the litter on Lake Bowen and Lake Blaylock.

Kenny Hardee and the Palmetto Watercraft Association utilized their boats this year, cleaning up the Spence Islands of Lake Murray, where they collected over 3,000lbs of trash and debris.

Tanya Grant and Sandy Campell, with the US Army Corp of Engineers organized over seven hundred volunteers for multiple weekends of ‘sweeping’ to give Lake Hartwell and its islands a thorough cleaning. All in all they collected approximately 4300 lbs of garbage and close to 40 tons of white bead flotation. Approximately 700 volunteers showed their pride in our public lands and waters, cleaning almost 100 miles of shoreline.

On behalf of South Carolinians throughout the state, many thanks to Jimmy, Kenny, Tanya and all of the thousands of Sweep volunteers who made 2007 a record year.
