WEATHER SUMMARY:

The first full week of summer began with strong high pressure over the state, and a 57 degree low temperature at Jocassee. Under clear skies, the temperature reached 97 degrees at the Florence Regional Airport. Diurnally driven isolated rainshowers formed Monday afternoon. 0.69 inches of rain fell at the Charleston International Airport. A trace of rain was reported at Table Rock. A series of weak upper-level trough produced more widespread rain on June 18. Caesars Head and Jocassee reported 1.97 and 1.73 inches of rain respectively. The National Weather Service Office in Charleston reported 0.15 inches of rain. Aiken reported a high temperature of 96 on June 18. High pressure over the state shifted eastwards and weakened on June 19. Residual rain activity produced morning rain for the Upstate. Calhoun Falls collected 1.38 inches of rain. Florence and Aiken reached an afternoon high temperature of 94 degrees. Forced by diurnal heating, the afternoon sea breeze produced scattered light rain over the Lowcountry. The Myrtle Beach area received a trace of rain and the Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station reported a hundredth of an inch of rain.

The sedate late Spring weather that started the week gave way to more energetic weather on Thursday, June 20. With a moist southwesterly flow in place, morning dew point temperatures rose to the mid to upper 70s across the state. Florence reported a high temperature of 96 degrees and a dewpoint of 72 degrees Thursday afternoon. Afternoon heating, surface moisture and a sharp upper level short wave trough combined to force a powerful line of thunderstorms that swept across the Midlands, Lowcountry and Pee Dee. Wind gusts downed hundreds of trees during the afternoon commute. Wind gust down power lines and knocked out power to thousands of utility customers. A falling tree in Columbia was responsible for the storm's single fatality. The Orangeburg Municipal Airport recorded a 63 m.p.h. wind gust and 0.67 inches of heavy rain. Winds gusted to 61 and 56 m.p.h. at Columbia-Owens Downtown Airport and Columbia Metro Airport respectively. A non-National Weather Service wind instrument atop Columbia's Williams-Brice Stadium recorded a 79 m.p.h. gust. On Friday, June 21. Florence, again, recorded the state's highest afternoon temperature of 97 degrees. A weak cold frontal passage ushered in drier, more stable air and clear skies prevailed across the state on Friday

A decaying mesoscale convective system passed over the state before sunrise Saturday, June 22, producing strong thunderstorm activity and localized heavy rainfall. Rainfall totaled 1.11 inches at the Columbia Metro Airport that also recorded a 59 m.p.h. wind gust. Temperatures and instability rebounded Saturday afternoon. Orangeburg reached 98 degrees before another round of strong thunderstorm activity Saturday evening. Half dollar-sized (1.25 inches) hail fell near Roebuck in Spartanburg county, and 1.75 inch hail fell near Whitmire in Newberry county. Thunderstorms also produced heavy rain and strong wind gusts. The Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station recorded 0.49 and 0.42 inches of rainfall from Saturday's morning and evening thunderstorm events respectively. The Air Station also recorded a 39 m.p.h. wind gust during the evening thunderstorm. Overnight rain cleared the state before sunrise on Sunday, June 23. The Georgetown County Airport reported an overnight rainfall total of 1.9 inches. Caesars Head had a Sunday morning low temperature of 61 degrees under overcast skies. Skies cleared slowly by Sunday afternoon and Barnwell warmed to 95 degrees. The high temperature at the Greenwood County, Columbia-Owens Downtown and Columbia Metro Airports only reached 87 degrees.
