Man charged in connection to Horry County boating accident

July 3, 2019

Ralph Gonyea, a 63-year-old Myrtle Beach man, has been charged with negligent operation based upon his failure to maintain a proper lookout after a boating accident in Horry County over the weekend.

SCDNR responded to the Intracoastal Waterway after a boat, operated by Gonyea, drove up and over another boat near Smith Boulevard at approximately 8:15 Sunday evening.

Four people were sent to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries and have since been released. Eight others were treated on scene.

SCDNR was able to recover the other boat from the Intracoastal Waterway after it sunk.

The investigation is ongoing.
