Golden Trashcan Awarded to Law Enforcement Region 4

September 17, 2025

Region 4 of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) Law Enforcement Division has won the coveted Golden Trashcan Award for the 2025-26 competition year!

Now in its' fourth year, the competition runs from July through June. What began as a friendly contest between the four regions of the Law Enforcement Division has grown into an annual tradition filled with bragging rights, camaraderie, and celebration—all in the name of keeping South Carolina clean and beautiful. The award continues to inspire greater participation, new partnerships, and expanded outreach across the state.

Region 4 is led by Captain Dennetta Dawson and covers Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Georgetown, Hampton, Horry, and Jasper counties. This past year, the officers in green set their sights on the gold and committed to leading the way in both enforcement and education.

Their results are impressive: 150 citations and warnings for litter violations; 3,037 patrol hours, which include surveillance and stakeouts; 23 outreach events to educate the public on boat safety and littering dangers; 18 community service hours validated; 36 abandoned vessels removed from waterways; and over 31 tons of trash collected from illegal dumpsites and waterways.

"This isn't just about a competition; it's about working together as a team, which strengthens unity within the region, but it feels good to have bragging rights!" said Captain Dawson.

Division-wide achievements this year include: 31 outreach events, 144 community service hours validated, 463 citations and warnings issued, 8,853 patrol hours logged, 36 abandoned vessels removed from waterways, and 46 tons (93,400 pounds) of trash removed.

On June 6th, National Secure Your Load Day, all four regions joined forces statewide to reward responsible citizens at collection sites. Drivers who properly secured their loads received a smile and an "I Got Caught" card, redeemable for a free Sonic milkshake. More than 800 cards were handed out, turning enforcement into encouragement.

These numbers reflect not just enforcement, but also dedication, teamwork, and a genuine commitment to preserving South Carolina’s natural beauty. SCDNR is proud of the men and women in green who prove every day that being a Game Warden is more than a job—it’s a way of life.

Congratulations and thank you to Region 4 for leading by example!
