Wildlife Management Summer Internship Program

Number of Positions: 8-12

Location: Various locations in SC. Some potential sites are: Bonneau, Clemson, Columbia, Florence, Georgetown, Green Pond, and McCormick, SC. Lodging may be available at some sites. Lodging will not be available at all sites.

Compensation: Intern will be paid $10/hour and will work 40 hours/week. Employee will have access to a vehicle to be used for work-related travel ONLY. A personal vehicle will be required for personal transportation.

Duration: 12 weeks, mid-May to mid-August (start/end dates somewhat flexible) 2018

Description: The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) seeks motivated individuals to participate in a 12-week wildlife management summer internship in the state. These internships are designed to give real-world experience in the wildlife management field. The intern will assist SCDNR Wildlife Management Area and Heritage Preserve staff with wildlife management duties. These duties likely will include, but are not limited to, planting food plots and dove fields, herbicide application, prescribed burning, wildlife and plant surveys (i.e., black bears, wild turkeys, fox squirrels, red-cockaded woodpeckers, rare plants), feral hog trapping, dove banding, GPS/GIS mapping projects, equipment setup and maintenance, and property maintenance (i.e., roads, boundaries, gates, electric fences).

Qualifications: Applicants must be working toward a degree in wildlife management or closely related field. Recently graduated individuals seeking field experience are also encouraged to apply. Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and the ability to clearly and effectively communicate and work independently with little supervision.

Work often will be at remote sites and in harsh conditions. Additionally, knowledge of wildlife biology and management practices is helpful.
