All residents born after June 30, 1979, must successfully complete a hunter education course that is approved by the Department of Natural Resources before a hunting license can be obtained. The SCDNR offers a 10-hour hunter education course which includes classroom instruction and hands-on experience in hunter safety and hunting techniques. In addition, students learn about hunting ethics, hunter/landowner relations and basic conservation and wildlife management principles.
To sign up for a Hunter Education class, note the following:
- You must pre-register for all classes in order to get into the class!
- Must have #2 pencil and Social Security Number to Attend.
- No charge unless noted.
- Any one under 12 years of age must be accompanied by a Guardian.
Individuals can take the online independent study course and complete the pre-exam at the end. Print out the pre-exam certificate and call to register to take the written final exam in person to receive your Hunter Education Card. For more information call 1-800-277-4301.
