Jocassee roads will close Friday due to approaching winter storm December 7, 2018

Roads are closing in Jocassee Gorges in northern Pickens and Oconee counties Friday, Dec. 7 due to expected winter weather. (SCDNR photo)

Roads within the Jim Timmerman Natural Resources Area at Jocassee Gorges will close beginning Friday, Dec. 7 in anticipation of the winter storm that is expected to hit the Upstate this weekend. The roads will remain closed until they are safe to drive on once again.

The Jocassee Gorges is in northern Pickens and Oconee counties and surrounds Lake Jocassee. The property features many different types of forest ecosystems and contains many rivers and streams. Jocassee Gorges, acquired by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) in 1998, is also home to many rare and unusual plants and animals. Numerous recreational uses include hunting, fishing, mountain biking, paddling, birdwatching and nature viewing.

The roads are being closed to prevent damage to them in the event of heavy snow or ice, and also for public safety, according to Mark Hall, Jocassee Gorges land manager. Jocassee roads will reopen within a few days, after the snow and ice has melted.
