New Lake Warren fishing pier ceremony on May 12 in Hampton County

Construction of a new fishing pier that would be accessible from the community building at Lake Warren State Park may soon be underway, with an announcement ceremony held May 12 at the park.

"Lake Warren and Lake Warren State Park are an amazing attraction in the Lowcountry," said Rep. Bill Bowers of Hampton, who is leading the effort to build the new fishing pier. "The community building at the park has no immediate access to the lake, and this pier will provide that access so that multiple groups can use the park. It will be a complete water experience for people using that building."Lake Warren

Lake Warren is the largest of the public lakes managed by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources in the State Lakes Program, which seeks to give freshwater fishing opportunities in areas of the state where they might not be readily available.

"This new fishing pier will not only be a great place to go fishing," Bowers said, "but it will be an iconic spot to view sunsets and for many other uses. The architecture of the new pier will also complement the existing architecture of the park."

Funding for the new fishing pier will come from the Hampton County Water Recreation Fund, which is derived from excise taxes on motor boat fuels. Water Recreation funds are "user-pay" and can only be used in projects that facilitate various forms of water recreation.

"We've been saving our Water Recreation funds in Hampton County for quite some time to be able to afford this new fishing pier at Lake Warren State Park," Bowers said.

The new fishing pier will be specially designed to be accessible to people with limited mobility.
