Description:
Abstract:
Two raster land covers with a resolution of 30 meters were produced from Landsat TM imagery dating from 1991, 1992, and 1993. There is a detailed 54-class land cover and a more general habitat-based 27 class land cover that was used for the GAP analysis modeling process.
Purpose:
The land cover was created as part of the SC-GAP project for use in modeling vertebrate distributions as well as for the purpose of having a detailed land cover for the state. The land cover will provide significant information to entities involved in conservation activities as well as providing a backdrop for further studies, including a change detection analysis.

Accuracy assessment was conducted on the South Carolina GAP Analysis 27-class vertebrate map using a combination of 1994 DOQQ/NAPP imagery, 2000 aerial videography, and field survey. A total of 1009 sites were surveyed between the summer of 1999 and fall of 2001. The overall weighted accuracy for the 27-class vertebrate map was 33.42%, with a standard error of 1.48%. Collapsing classes into a 13-class Anderson Level II and a 7-class Anderson Level I map yielded accuracies of 51.40% (standard error = 1.57%) and 71.86% (standard error = 1.42%), respectively.
Quantitative_Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 33.42%
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation:
The user’s accuracy of each map class was weighted by the proportion of the total mapped area represented by that class. Weighted user’s accuracies of all classes were then summed to calculate the overall weighted accuracy.

Process_Description:
Landsat TM images were subset by sub-basin hydrologic units - a total of 280 sub-units. Each imagery unit was clustered using ISODATA algorithm. Clusters were labeled by interpreting NAPP aerial photography. All imagery units were mosaicked to produce a state-wide classification. The classification was then improved using ancillary data (soils, NWI, physiographic, Topographic Relative Moisture Index (TRMI) data). Using ancillary data, decision rules were applied to improve classifications. Decision rules were applied on a county basis. Using an iterative process, maps were produced by county and were checked for accuracy. In many cases, modifications were made to the decision rules and new land cover was produced for assessment. County land covers were mosaicked together to produce a final 54-class land cover. This was then aggregated into a habitat-based version of the land cover consisting of 27 classes for use in GAP analysis.

Where they are too small to distinguish from surrounding marshes, tidal freshwater forests and tidal river edge shrub wetlands are included in this class. Fresh marshes may sometimes be mapped as wet soil, due to the absence of vegetation in winter imagery.

Enumerated_Domain_Value: Swamp
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Coastal plain swamps support cypress, tupelo, overcup oak, water hickory, and other species and are usually semipermanently flooded to seasonally flooded. Swamps and bottomland hardwoods could not be reliably separated by GAP techniques or decision rules so they have been mapped as one unit. Where they are too small or narrow to map separately, elevated levees and upland forests may be included in this class. This class includes isolated freshwater wetlands as well as riverine wetlands.

Enumerated_Domain_Value: Bottomland/floodplain forest
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Bottomland Hardwood Forests may include swamp species, but are usually dominated by other hardwood species such as sweet gum, oaks, elms, etc. and are usually seasonally or temporarily flooded or saturated.

Enumerated_Domain_Value: Open canopy/recently cleared forest
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
This class includes snags, fallen trees, woodland openings, and cutover forests. Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Rock outcrop
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Caves, crevices, rocky outcrops. Includes granitic flatrocks of the Piedmont and granitic domes of the mountains. Rock outcrops were often either too small to map or were confused with urban land cover types by the mapper, so the rock outcrop class is underestimated on the GAP map.

Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Aquatic vegetation
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Vegetation of semi-permanent or temporary lakes, ponds, pools, streams and rivers. Rice fields along the coast that support emergent vegetation are mapped as class 'Freshwater Marsh'.

Enumerated_Domain:
Enumerated_Domain_Value: Closed canopy evergreen forest/woodland
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Closed canopy evergreen forest includes closed canopy sites dominated by pines, cedars, hemlocks, and evergreen oaks. Mixed forests are also mapped here. This class can occur on any soil wetness class ranging from dry to wet and it occurs throughout the state. Most pine plantations are found in this class.

Enumerated_Domain_Value: Needle-leaved evergreen mixed forest/woodland
Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
Upland pine stands with a relatively open canopy and an understory of deciduous scrub oaks. Typical evergreen overstory components are longleaf pine, Virginia pine, loblolly pine, shortleaf pine, and red cedar. This class includes the Piedmont, Sandhills, and Coastal Plain Scrub Complexes. Small inclusions of pond pine seeps, longleaf pine seeps, seepage shrub slopes, small depression pocosins, streamhead pocosins, depression meadows, or hillside herb bogs may occur within this map class. Mixed forests are also mapped here. Where the canopy is very sparse, these woodlands may be mapped as 'dry scrub/shrub', 'open canopy/recently cleared forest', 'grassland/pasture', or 'cultivated land'.

Upland pine woodlands with a grassy understory. Upland pine flatwoods with longleaf or slash pine are included in this class. Examples of possible small-patch wetland inclusions within this map class are pine savannas, depression meadows, pond forests, pond pine woodlands, pocosins, and pitcher plant flats. Where the canopy is very sparse, these woodlands may be mapped as 'dry scrub/shrub', 'open canopy/recently cleared forest', 'grassland/pasture', or 'cultivated land'.
