Dove Field Information
Planning Dove Fields
Spring is the ideal time to begin preparing fields to attract doves for the fall hunting season. A successful shoot starts with early planning and proper field preparation.
Planting Recommendations
Doves are drawn to a variety of seed-producing crops. Consider planting:
- Browntop millet
- Sunflowers
- Grain sorghum
- Corn
- Wheat (for overseeding or fall planting)
Crops should mature just before or during the season opener to ensure food availability. Staggered planting can help attract doves throughout the season.
Baiting Regulations
All dove fields must be managed according to normal agricultural practices. Placing grain or feed to lure doves is considered baiting and is illegal under state and federal law.
To stay in compliance:
- Dove Baiting Regulations
- Do not top-sow grains without proper incorporation
- Avoid spreading seed near hunting dates
